Wondrous as the new Lightroom is, I couldn’t help but be a little sad that Photoshop had to be left behind. Before I used Lightroom, editing a decent number of files in Photoshop would take the better part of a day. It’s far faster to select objects and adjust their settings, crop, then save the images, than it is to do so with Lightroom. You’ll also get better control when it comes to display resolutions in Lightroom. Ideally, I would like a photo editor app with the nuance of Photoshop and the versatility of Lightroom. But neither application seems to have enough of one or the other, and it’s hard to tell if the new version of Photoshop is only just beginning to address Lightroom’s speed advantage. At the same time, it’s hard to imagine any user trying to edit even a handful of files in Lightroom. Photoshop also comes with a host of additional tools, such as layers, selection tools, adjustment layers, and filters, not to mention more powerful ways to manipulate images. While the latter is quite nice for the color-aware, the rest of us might also have to wait for Lightroom. A merger might have been a nice choice.
