A study which examined over 800 cases of domestic abuse in various Asian countries has led to an answer to one question: Are women more likely to be victims of domestic abuse than men?
The study, published in the International Journal of Family Violence, found that the rate of male victimization was two times higher than that of female victimization in all of the included countries.
Much of this difference seems to be attributed to the fact that women are often reluctant to report domestic abuse.
With research like this, it is easy to conclude that abuse is an issue which happens more often to men, but the reality is that men in most countries are more likely to be victims of physical violence than women.
Of all the countries that participated in the survey, the highest rates of male victimization were found in India, at 80% and in Pakistan, at 77%.
The least likely to be victimized by abuse were those in Taiwan, at 61%. The most likely to be victimized by domestic abuse, however, were those in the Philippines, at 84%.
The reason why this is may not be just because of culture or other specific factors but, rather, a reflection of the fact that in most Asian countries, gender equality is still a very distant possibility.
In fact, a recent study found that almost 80% of women in India and Pakistan still work outside of their homes and that many families there are still structured around patriarchal authority, giving male members of the family control over what their daughters and female relatives do.
It is also worth noting that for men in most of these countries, domestic abuse is not viewed as a serious problem — it is often seen as a man’s problem, rather than a community issue.
The sad reality is that we still live in a world where the vast majority of abuse is still committed by men and women alike. It’s just that perhaps because they’re more likely to be victims of physical abuse, it seems that men are given less attention in the media than women are.
