Of those firefighters, 42% said they were “very concerned” about the future of the profession. The survey was conducted by survey firm Harris Polling. The survey was conducted in February, shortly after President Obama’s budget proposed to cut $88 million from the Department of Homeland Security and $250 million from the Department of Defense. The survey found that only 11 percent of those surveyed supported the president’s budget. The Association of Fire Chiefs said it plans to deliver a letter to President Obama and Congress outlining the steps it is taking to address the firefighter shortage and to ensure the public’s safety.
